Puppy Tips

Daily Care

Put your puppy on a feeding and bathroom schedule. Puppies need to eat 2-3 times a day. Puppies need clean, fresh water daily.

Puppies should eat puppy food for the first 12-18 months of life.

Puppies need frequent bathroom breaks to help encourage effective house training. Puppies often use the bathroom shortly after waking from naps and after eating. They will often sniff the floor, spin in a circle or begin whining just before using the bathroom.

Your puppy may not want to eat much during the first day with you. You can mix in 1 teaspoon of cottage cheese, canned puppy food if needed.

Puppies are fragile and should be handled with care. Be very careful when carrying and playing.

Puppies should not be allowed to jump on/off furniture this increases the puppies risk of fracturing legs or developing hip/ shoulder problems.

Your puppy is currently eating Purina Puppy Chow Complete, if you choose to switch to another brand of puppy food make the transition over 7 days by gradually adding more of the new puppy food each day.

Do not leave your puppy outside unattended. Do not leave your puppy out in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Health

Puppies need all vaccinations completed by a vet of your choice. Vaccinations are normally updated on weeks 6, 9, 12 and 15-16. A rabies vaccine is given with the last booster shot at week 15-16.

Your puppy is up to date on dewormings but may need additional dewormings as directed by your vet.

Your puppy should be placed on a heart worm preventative as directed by your vet.

Your puppy will need to be placed on a flea and tick preventative as directed by your vet.

Your puppy should not visit public areas (dog parks, pet stores, friends houses, etc.) until vaccinations are complete and cleared by your vet for public travel.

Annual health visits with a vet is recommended to maintain vaccination schedule and overall health.

If you want to get your puppy spayed or neutered most vets recommend these procedures at 6-18 months of age. Smaller breeds typically sooner than larger breeds

Grooming

Corgis should be brushed daily to help reduced shedding.

Corgis will shed heavy approximately 2 times a year, once shed their winter coat and a second time to prepare for their winter coat.

Check with your groomer to set a schedule for bathing and blow-outs most people seems to like every 3 months for Corgis.

Nails should be kept short and clean.  This can be done easily by using a Dremel tool. (Their are several pet options on the market)

Cavapoos typically are a non-shedding to very low shedding breed. This means they will need daily brushing to reduce hair knots and matting.

Most groomers recommend appointments every 4-8 weeks depending on hair type and growth rate of the cavapoo.
